Barista smiles as I ring up myself,
drop in some change for a tip.
“I take a share when I leave, right?”
No more smiling.
A service dog greets me with panting tongue
as a long-time outdoor resident clings
to a steaming mug,
absorbing all of its warmth into her soul.
Conversations buzz of church.
Sports. Always weather.
Business. More church and sports.
“Who understands social media?”
“I don’t understand my phone.”
Four sorority girls silently sip lattes while
staring at screens.
Out of towners
ask for dinner recommendations
and directions,
help comes from multiple tables.
This is my Springfield.
