This week, I played catch with my dad and as a dad and as an adopted college dad.
I played catch with a collegiate ballplayer who remembers his first game of catch with his dad.
I toured baseball glove heaven and got a brain workout playing catch with one of the best pitchers I’ve ever faced.
I reconnected with one of my best friends from school for the first time in decades.
And, of course, I’ve played catch in Missouri’s “gorgeous” winter weather.
In this upcoming week, I’ll be speaking on “The Secrets of My Success,” sharing stories of lessons learned from playing catch and applying them to whatever goal or resolution someone chooses to pursue. It was while I was working on that speech, I had an idea.
I want to make an amendment to my goal for this year.
I’m still going to try and play catch every day. I’m still planning on traveling to make new catch-playing friends. I’m still looking for opportunities to share more stories about how playing catch can make this world a better place.
The amendment is this: Once a week, I’m going to play catch with my dad. During these games, I’m going to ask him a “Question of the Week,” so I can record his wisdom and humor and make more intentional memories with my favorite catch partner. Dad will turn 80 this year and he’s one of the smartest people I know. I’ll gladly trade helping him with lawn care in exchange for more games of catch.
