A Cubs fan and a Royals fan met in Springfield for a game of catch on a 60 degree day in January and it was perfect.
I first met Megan in the parking lot of the K during the Royals 2015 postseason run. It was the first game of the ALCS against the Blue Jays and I was six hours early. Megan’s cameraman, Eric, was a friend from college and I agreed to give a quick interview about my Royals fandom. I have absolutely no idea what I said, but I remember being impressed by Megan.
Megan is a sports anchor for KOLR 10 and won the 2017 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for sports reporting.
Growing up in Chicago with two older brothers, she played pretty much every sport. I tried to get her to say she was the best athlete in the family, but she wouldn’t concede. “One of my brothers played collegiate basketball. He’s an incredible shooter.” She is a fan of every team in Chicago except the White Sox. This Royals fan agrees completely.
Her dream interview would have been Ron Santo, hall of fame third baseman for the Cubs who retired and became a broadcaster. But Santo passed away in 2010.
“Having a beer with Theo Epstein and getting the chance to interview him, that would be pretty awesome, too.”
Megan’s big dream for 2018 will happen in October when she gets married.
I am willing to bet that, sometime in the not too distant future, Megan’s going to win an Emmy and I’ll get to tell my children, “I played catch with her.”
